As I look at my 2011 list of goals I realize I did pretty good. Didn't quite get to all of them but I did finish my main goal, a professional website with a cart. For 2012 I plan to focus on printables. Above is an addition to my Alice in Wonderland collection. This Alice Party Set will feature a very fun paper tea set and wonderful pocket watch invitation.

I'm also working on a cute bird collection. I just finished the paper shape of the little bird below. The collection will include a cuckoo clock, birdcage and bird house.

Alice in Wonderland Cupcake Party Printable Playset

This is such a wonderful playset. I don't know what I like best, Alice growing out of Rabbit's house, the caterpillar and mushroom or maybe the tiny dining set with the cupcake spread. Over the years I've revisited the the story of Alice in Wonderland and have done my best to capture the spirit of the book in my artistic style at the time. Here is an interesting look at how my style has changed the past 15 years. With each period I have learned something new and evolved as an artist.

I created this depiction of the "Mad Tea Party" at the time I was making miniature dolls. My intention was to pay homage to Tenniel's original illustrations. I made this set around 2005. I wasn't doing much illustration at the time, my focus was on sculpting. The clothing is hand sewn by me.

In the 90's I was into the Tim Burton style. My style was a bit darker and more frenetic. This is a mixed media illustration I did in water color, ink and color pencil.

Shortly after I created the illustration above I made these working marionettes out of polymer clay. I checked out a vintage book from the library and learned how to make marionettes. I couldn't even sew at the time. A friend made the clothing for me. I have since taught myself how to sew.

Finally in my current kawaii style I have combined my illustration and sculpting skills to make this vibrant depiction of Alice and the characters she meets in Wonderland. I have gone back to my original illustration roots when my drawings were sweet and simple. More details of this playset will be revealed in a few days.

I was also able to combine my blog seamlessly with my shop. My blog as you may know has cute crafty tutorials. In a mad dash to find storage for my free PDFs I discovered Google Docs. My tutorial documents can now be previewed before printing. How convenient is that!

In addition to shopping at my website, Goodsie has a Facebook app. That's right an app that allows the customer to shop directly on my Facebook page. How cool is that!

Walker Art Center Shop!!!

I have to say I was beyond thrilled and a little emotional when I was invited to sell my toys at the Walker Art Center Shop. It had been a goal for me for to have my work there and now my fawns will be available in the gift shop starting November 17.

As part of a collaboration with mnartists.org a handful of local artists were selected to sell there art at the Walker Shop and website shop. Mnartists.marketplace will be an ongoing event and I'm proud to be part of the launch for this curated series.

I love the direction the Walker is taking and accepting the local handmade community into the world of fine art. As someone who likes to browse gift shops, the Walker Shop is one of my favorites!

Amazing Works of Art!

Artist Devorah Sperber has the ability to take common craft objects such as thread spools and pipe cleaners and turn them into works of art fit for galleries. Check out her website to see her take on The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa made with thousands of thread spools. Its no surprise that some of her work is funded by Coats and Clark.

You may need to step back from your computer screen or squint your eyes for this iconic image made with pipe cleaners to come into focus.

MADE IN CHINA

A popular online store is selling a cheap imitation of my handmade White Christmas Reindeer. The details are undeniable; size, color, the shape of the eyes, scallop detail on the hooves, even the number of spots are duplicated. In fact, I thought this was one of mine until closer inspection.

The retailer denies the similarities and continues to sell the copycat. They would not reveal the identity of the manufacturer. So I bought one. With the tag intact I was able to identify the manufacturer. It turns out the the manufacturer is a gift wholesaler located in the same state I live. Coincidence? I think not.

This knockoff was not approved by me nor was I compensated in any way by the manufacturer. I have not partnered with the retailer or the manufacturer. If you see this imitation online or anywhere else please do not buy it. The quality and craftsmanship are inferior to my handmade originals. They are made on an assembly line in China.

All my toys are handmade. I've spent years developing the patterns for all my creations. Craftsmanship is very important to me. I scrutinize over each toy I make so that its perfect. Please support all handmade artists by buying directly from the artist.

Meet the Giraffe Family. Mr. Giraffe is an inventor/artist who rides a penny farthing to his office. Mrs. Giraffe loves her husband and adores her son. Their son takes after his father and likes to tag along and help him with his inventions.

Before Fantastic Toys is what it is today I used to make 1/12 scale miniature animal dolls. I imagined a world with fanciful dressed animals who would gather in a formal garden to relax, be entertained, play and socialize about the days events. After much delay I'm finally up to the task of taking new photos and start listing the dolls in a NEW Etsy shop. Stay tuned for upcoming details.

Located at the corner of 38th and Grand this independent craft studio has loads of charm and personality reminiscent of an ol' timey trim & notions shop from a bygone era. Wander around the shop to find handmade goodies made by local artists as well as unique crafting supplies. Everything from cards, fabric, buttons and yarn can be found attractively displayed among the vintage decor. Its great to have a shop like this in the area and I can't wait to see how it grows in the community. Support handmade and your local Mom and Pop shops, check it out when you're in the area. New Craft Book ~ Kids Crafternoon Felting

This was a great side project I did last winter. I was asked to create a tutorial in a felting craft book. Its part of series of craft books called Kids Crafternoon published in Australia. My assignment was to construct a money bank out of a mailing tube. Hmmm, well it seemed like a challenge until I decided to take advantage of the shape and make a cute wiener dog. His doggy coat is easily removed to reveal a hidden money slot to save your coins for a rainy day.

I'm very pleased with the way the book turned out and glad to be a part of it. The editor was a dream to work with! The colorful and beautifully photographed book features 25 felt projects for a crafty afternoon. Robots, ipod animals, zombie critters and of course the dachshund money bank I designed are just a few of the items featured. Check it out!

Needle Felted Snail

Its been a nice summer. I took some time off creatively and spent the days enjoying the weather walking and biking. I finally reached a personal goal of losing 25 pounds and I got to visit Paris which I thought was only a dream that could never happen. Now I'm ready to hunker down and get back to work making some new items. Here is the first. Inspired by the snail that lived in the topiary tree in Versailles, I needle felted this sweet snail. A kawaii playset of Alice in Wonderland is next and hopefully I'll roll out some new Christmas paper crafts in a few months. Stay in touch!

Paris Carousels

Carousels are plentiful in Paris. In fact there are two located right across the street from the Eiffel Tower. This one happened to be my favorite, a beautiful two story deluxe carousel. Check out the stairs going to the second level! Just like everything else in Paris, so much to dazzle your eyes. It made for a great photo op with the Eiffel Tower behind it. Check out the video I filmed of the Paris Carousel in motion.

This is the Montmartre carousel that was featured in the movie Amelie. Its located in front of the Sacre Coeur. If you look closely you can spot the overnight guest located in one of the carriages.

L' Orangerie ~ My Happy Place!

When times are tough and I'm stressed out, sometimes I would try to imagine a place where everything is calm, relaxed, lovely. Typically it is some kind of garden but I didn't really know what it looked like. I tried to imagine something beautiful but it could never measure up to something as sublime as this.

As I'm rushing to see everything on my tour of Versailles Garden before the bus leaves, I discovered this beautiful garden. I don't know what it is about topiary trees but I 've always found them fascinating. L'Orangerie was by far one of the highlights of my trip to Paris. The garden featured hundreds of petite orange trees and ornamental topiaries. As I was leaving I noticed a lovely pale yellow snail gliding along the leaves of one of the sculptured topiary trees. It was a sight to behold and one I'll never forget. This is my happy place!

Fabric Shopping in Paris!

At the base of the Sacre Coeur east of the Carousel I wandered into Montmartre's fabric district. As with all shopping in Paris, items spill into the sidewalks including the fabric shops enticing you into the shop. There are no big box chain stores, only individual tissus/mercerie (fabric/notions) shops lining the streets. This particular area seemed to go on for at least a few blocks. If I lived in Paris I'm sure this is an area I would frequently visit.

My favorite was a charming shop called Moline, 1 place St Pierre established in 1879. Yes thats right 1879! The Mercerie had everything you needed to create your craft items.The store was arranged with different areas. The photos below depict entry into the shop, the calico print fabric room and a wall of buttons.

Super Duper Crafty Mom!

It amazes me how some Moms can put together such elaborate parties for their children. One such mom is Elle Belle. Her garden themed U-Pick Party involved so much attention and thought it boggles my mind. My hats off to her! Some of the handmade highlights of the beautifully coordinated party were custom garden aprons for the children and fruit dip for the parents. When I was a kid I was lucky enough to get a cake from the grocery store and my favorite meal. Anyways check out the details and photos of the special event. :)

My paper gnomes and fawn were lucky to be part of the event as take home treats for the guests.

Product Review ~ Puffies

I recently discovered these miniature felt Puffies at my local Archiver's scrapbook store. They are so cute I had to get them. I wasn't quite sure what to do with them until I visited their website and found some creative ideas. They are meant for scrapbooking because they have an adhesive backing but can be utilized for other craft projects as well. A friend of mine is a having a baby girl and I thought that this would be a great gift for the baby's room. I also did some Paris themed wall hangings to honor my upcoming trip. I'm so excited, this will be my first trip to Europe and I have dreamed about it for some time. I'm staying a whole week and plan to visit all the sights. I'm even planning a day trip to Bruge which may be even more exciting then Paris.

I was lucky to receive photos from two buyers this past Sunday. Jeanie's daughter was in an Alice in Wonderland play and she put together this cupcake display for the cast party. I love all different sized cupcakes and the attention to detail she put into the display. The kids must of been thrilled to see the Alice inspired treats!

Shown below, Angela had a small party for her 40th B-day and used some of the paper crafts I sell as favors. She mentioned that they were very simple to make and frustration free even with a 6 month old in her lap trying to help. :) Thank you ladies for sharing your photos!

Pinocchio Printable Paper Marionette

One of my favorite memories from childhood was watching a marionette show at a summer picnic. I was so enamored by the show that the kindly elder puppeteers invited me over to their home to show me their collection of puppets. Ever since then I've been fond of puppets and have made many over the years including marionettes.

This charming Pinocchio marionette really works! It is constructed just like traditional marionettes except this one is made of paper. You can pretend to make him walk or dance by moving the controller he hangs from. Any young inspiring puppeteer would love to have this delightful toy.

Now that I have the basic puppet template designed I'm thinking of making more characters. What character would you like to see next?

I recently found these enchanting felt mice from dollsandbunnies while being featured in one of Ella's treasuries. I love the vintage, Beatrix Potter inspired collection of animals she creates. The way she photographs them with cottage photos in the background really adds to the charm of her handmade characters. If you have ever made miniature dolls you can appreciate Ella's work. I've seen tiny felt dolls in the past and I know how difficult it can be to turn those tiny arms and legs. It takes a special kind of patience to do so and Ella never cuts any corners while making her dolls. They are perfect!

Goals for 2011 - Licensing

At the end of every year I finish up my business paper work and write down goals for the next year. My goal for this year is to wear my jammies to work. What I mean by this is that I'd like to work full time from home, creating art all day. In fact I was so inspired to do so that I bought some cozy fleece pjs, a robe and some fuzzy slippers. I thought if I at least wore the work-at-home uniform it would help my dreams come true. Funny thing is, they make me feel like some lazy old goat instead of a confident independent artist making a living selling my artwork from home. I'm not yet convinced wearing elastic waist pajamas all day inspires motivation and energy.

Anyways, last year was a so-so year. Half the craft shows were very challenging and unprofitable. I started to write down goals for my shop after the new year. I began with small goals - getting items into my Etsy shop that I've been putting off. That didn't seem to be enough, I had to think bigger. I've been wanting to get into licensing for some time now and this is the year to do it. I want to take Fantastic Toys to the next level.

I've always loved the idea of my toys being sold in stores around the nation. In the past I've done wholesale orders where I'm the sole manufacturer - making each item by hand can be so draining. I love to design and create and would prefer to have someone else manufacture the items, which leads me to licensing. I didn't know much about licensing so I began researching and found some great blogs online as well as some books specifically for licensing artwork. So I'm getting my ducks in a row, learning as much as I can about licensing and supporting my self with my art, jammies or not.

Ok, so this may be my favorite paper toy I've designed so far. A working paper marionette of Pinocchio! I've been cooped up all weekend because of the snow storm and was able to make a lot of progress. I have the character down and the technical aspect of making him move correctly is finished. He's fully jointed and will move and dance just like any other marionette. I just need to design the controller and string him up! He should be available shortly.

The classic story of the Nutcracker and Mouse brought to life as printable paper toys. Now you can reenact the epic battle between the Nutcracker and Mouse King. I'm not sure what they were fighting over, the Sugar Plum Fairy or just peanuts?

The Nutcracker even has a movable jaw! Although I wouldn't try cracking any nuts with it. The Mouse King has this cool feature which allows you to roll it on the floor. Not only will the kids love the rolling mouse but your cat just might too.

Printable Paper Crafts - Tools for Making Paper Toys

Printable paper toys are a fun and inexpensive way to craft. Printables are often available as PDFs and can be downloaded for instant gratification in minutes. To those of you who are new to printable paper crafts I thought I would have a couple of tutorials available to help educate the basics of paper crafting. If you're into scrapbooking and paper crafting I'm sure you have these items on hand. Most of these tools can be purchased at your local office supply or craft store.

Tools for making printable paper toys. Starting from the lower right going counter clockwise.

1. TOOTHPICKS I use toothpicks to put a thin layer of glue on the tabs for gluing. I will put a dollop of glue on some scratch paper and load the toothpick up with some glue. I then layer the glue on the tab as if I was buttering a piece of toast. If you use large amounts of glue especially on large shapes and tabs the glue will tend to warp the cardstock. This is why I prefer this method.

2. SCORING TOOLS Scoring tools are necessary for precisely folding a paper toy. Scoring is making a slight indentation in the cardstock so it easily folds. My favorite tool of all time is a 5" tapestry needle I found on clearance at the craft store. I have used this tool for sculpting small details on dolls and now I use it for scoring all my paper toys. I have also included a bone folder in the photo which is commonly used to score cardstock. Some other tools that can be used to score cardstock are a blunt knitting needle, dried up pen or edge of a paper clip.

3. CRAFT KNIFE A craft knife/X-acto knife is used for cutting small details that a scissors could not do. Most of my paper toys do not require one but I will occasionally use one for cutting small bits out. A craft knife should always be used with adult supervision. They are very sharp and not recommended for children.

4. SCISSORS I have two pairs of scissors for paper crafting. I use the large pair for cutting out large shapes and the small pair for small detailed cutting. The small pair of scissors is invaluable for getting around tiny shapes and corners.

5. RULER A stainless steel ruler is used to assist with scoring a printable toy. I will run my scoring tool along side a ruler to make a straight crisp fold. A plastic ruler will work in a pinch but a stainless steel ruler is best because a plastic ruler will often chip or be cut into by a craft knife.

6. SELF HEALING MAT A self healing mat is used when cutting the cardstock with a craft knife. It will protect the surface you are working on. It is not necessary, as a piece of cardboard will work as well.

7. CRAFT GLUE My favorite glue is Aleene's Tacky Glue. I use this glue for felt appliques and paper toys. Its tacky enough to hold two pieces together and dries quickly with cardstock. Two paper pieces will bond together within 30-45 seconds. I have never used anything else but have heard most white glue will work.

8. CARDSTOCK 8 1/2" x 11" heavy weight 60lb. -110lb. cardstock is what I recommend to print paper toys on. The cardstock I buy at my office supply store is labeled white index.
9. COLOR PRINTER Any color printer will work fine when printing a printable. I use a home ink jet printer for designing my paper toys. When I'm finished with the design I will put the document on a flash drive and bring them to my local printer for printing. A professional printer will bring out the vivid colors a home printer will often not. I am often asked if you need color cardstock for the paper toys. A color printer will print out the solid colors and additional color cardstock is not needed. I design all my paper toys as color documents to be printed on white cardstock.

Julie from mademama.com sent me a link to photos of her daughter Raleigh's first birthday party. She made enlarged copies of my characters to decorate the woodland themed party. Julie explained to me that her daughter loves the squirrel and deer so much that she put them on Raleigh's bedroom wall. She regularly points to them and does the sign for them. I was so touched I got a little teary eyed. This is the happy little bird in her home made owl costume. Candice said that she ended up playing with the Mushroom Hill set more than her kids. She glued the pieces on some additional cardstock to make them extra sturdy for childs play. I know its a little early for Christmas but when the holidays are the best time for your business, I begin the holiday inventory in the summer. Its no wonder why I stopped decorating the house for the holidays. I've been making decorations since August! The picture above is a mountain of of softie ornaments I'm currently making. I've added 5 new designs to my existing ornament collection. I didn't realize I was making so many but after stuffing them all, I have well over a 100. I'll be glad to finish these up and pack them away for my upcoming shows.

Last year sales were kinda of slow. As a result of that I've tripled the amount of shows I'm doing this year. I'm looking forward to the new craft shows this holiday season. My work will be on display at the Textile Center for there annual holiday sale. I was also asked to be involved with Peggy's Holiday Boutique. This will be Peggy's 33rd year featuring the work of over 150 artists. I've never been there so it should be interesting. Lastly I'll be at HandmadeMN 1st annual holiday market. Don't you love the graphics for the event! Check show info for specific detail on all events.

Mushroom Pin Cushion Tutorial

Mushroom harvesting season is here and I thought this would be a good time to share my Mushroom Pin Cushion Tutorial. This cute pin cushion reminds me of something granny would have kept in her sewing box. Its a fairly simple project that requires a bit of sewing and a hot glue gun. I purchased all the supplies at my local craft store. Happy crafting!

Materials Required

Polka Dot Fabric

2 1/4" Diameter Wood Disc

1 1/2 " Wood Candle Cup Holder

Mini Ric Rac

Hot Glue or Craft Glue

Wool Roving for Stuffing

Instructions

1. Cut out a 7 1/4" diameter circle in your favorite polka dot print.

2. Sew a gathering stitch around the edge of your circle.

3. Pull your gathering stitch to create the mushroom cap. Pack cap with wool roving. Pull gathering stitch tight, close and knot. (A polyfill will work but wool filling is much better. Wool will make a stiff cap that will hold your pins in place. A poly fill will make a squishy cap but will still work.)

4. Glue candle cup holder to wood disc to make mushroom stem.

5. Put a layer of hot glue on top of the wood disc and quickly push mushroom cap onto disc and hold into place until the glue dries. Hot glue typically dries in under a minute.

6. Glue a piece of ric rac around the edge of the wood disc for decoration.

7. Finish the mushroom with a cut felt flower and a pretty pin.

Outdoor craft shows are sucky!

Go ahead, laugh. I did, until I realized that the collapsed tent was mine when I arrived this morning. Its not a good feeling finding your tent knocked over to the side with all your display stuff sitting outside of your tent, soaking wet. :( This is what was left of my EZ Up tent after the high winds hit and twisted the frame into a pretzel. I thought I did everything I was suppose to, as far as weighing down the tent yet this happens.

Needless to say I'm done with the outdoor craft show thing. It certainly takes a strong person to deal with the fickle weather and hawking art goods outside. Next time you see me at a craft show it will be INDOORS away from the wind, rain and heat. Buh BYE outdoor craft shows!

Please learn from my mistakes.
1. If you leave your tent over night in strong wings lower your tent roof by bringing the legs down. Not only will your tent have a lower profile but the legs will double in strength because they fit together into one solid leg reducing the chance of bending.
2. If you can't stake your legs because you are on pavement you must get the heavy weights that are placed on the feet of the tent to prevent it from sliding because of the strong winds.
3. The hanging cement PVC weights will keep your tent from lifting off like a hot air balloon but they will also pull down your tent if the legs are swept from underneath. Please follow 1. and 2. to prevent this from happening.

This pink fawn has been with me since the beginning of Fantastic Toys. One of the first plush toys I made was this darling. After posting pictures on Flickr I received so much positive feedback I knew I was on to something. Since then Fantastic Toys has grown to include many soft toys, paper toys, fabric and kits. My ideas for new toys are endless and I hope the next 5 years will be just as productive and successful.

FYI, Spoonflower now has a feature which allows you to purchase fabric that other indie crafters have designed. For each fat quarter or yardage sold the artist receives 10% of the sale price. Its optional of course. If you design some fabric you don't have to have it available for sale to the public. Powderhorn Art Fair 2010

Outdoor Shows are hard work! Especially if the temperature reaches a record high of 96 degrees. Not sure if I'll do another outdoor show during the summer. Both years I've done this particular show have been a bust. Last year it was the rain, this year the heat. UGGHHH!! Someone else best described outdoor craft shows as retail camping. Yes indeed!

I do have to say I learned a lot from last years show and this year was less stressful. It is fun setting up a temporary shop, where otherwise I wouldn't have the opportunity. My mom was a tremendous help ... she was so friendly with all the customers. I was glad to have her along as my helper. Highlights of the weekend were the puppet show, snow cones and misting battery operated fans.

Received this pink metal fridge the day before to display my fabric magnets.

MANUFACTORY - Handmade Collectible Toy Shop

Back in 2006 when I was setting up my Etsy shop looking for inspiration I found fellow Minneapolis artist Curster. I've been quietly following her growing success over the years and now she has her own B&M on 27th and Lyndale where her wonderful creations are available for sale.

Manufactory which resides in the space of former occupant Robot Love is filled with Erin Currie's fantastical beings along with other collectible toys and gifts. I was amazed at the amount of work that Erin herself has handmade and is available in the shop. I asked her if she ever slept or drank lots of coffee to accomplish so much. Besides collectible toys she also designs clothing and paints which is evident in some of the dolls she makes. Below are some of the frilly dolls that carry over her fashion sense.

Being a second generation shop owner Erin shared her experience of working in her mothers Scandinavian handicraft shop painting faces on gnomes. Her goal for Manufactory is to have a shop where other artists can sell their work and provide a space for them to create as well. Erin's passion is evident and work ethic incomparable. With those two attributes I'm sure her shop will be a smashing success. If you're in the area check it out!

Mushroom Forest Collection

Adventures With Embroidery

As if I didn't have enough to do with making plush, digital illustration, paper toys and custom fabric I had to add embroidery. The embroidery machine I bought last winter has been sitting idle taking up space for months now. I was beginning to think of ways to unload it on Craigs List. The machine sat there taunting me, reminding me of what colossal amount of money I invested, for nothing.

For some reason I thought I could plug in an illustration with a flash drive and it would magically embroider my illustration like a printer would printing ink onto paper. I could go about my business while the machine was happily stitching away. Hah! Not quite that simple. In reality you pretty much have to babysit the machine while its embroidering. With each color change you must change the thread color, cut the threads and make sure nothing else goes awry while it doing its thing. A design can take up to 45 minutes or more to complete.

The digitizing process itself is quite a bear. As with all new software there is a learning process. Slowly but surely I'm gaining confidence with the tools and have begun stitching my first samples. Although I have so much more to learn I'm starting to like the whole idea of adding embroidery to my list of crafty conquests. I think it fits well with my brand. My plan is to have finished embroidered artwork for my upcoming show in August. Let me know what you think of my first sample of Little Red.

Mushroom Hill Printable Paper Playsets

Welcome to Mushroom Hill! I have always imagined a land of rolling hills covered with mushroom cottages where my characters could frolic and play. Its hard to believe that every one of these characters I've illustrated here have been made in a plush version beforehand. Typically an artist will make a soft toy from an illustration but I tend to work the other way around. I like to work out the form and character by sculpting it in fabric, then I capture it as an illustration.

My first paper toy was the gnome mushroom cottage pictured last. I have now added two new cottages to the collection. A fairy mushroom cottage and a mushroom cottage dollhouse complete the collection. I have to say the dollhouse with the tiny paper furniture is my favorite. It features Gnomie and all of her animal friends. Gnomie tends to the animals of the forest and they are always welcome at her home for tea and peanut butter cookies.The playsets can be found in my etsy shop.

Summer School at MCAD!!

Can't wait to start my class next week at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. I've lived blocks from MCAD for many years and have always thought about taking classes there. While at the Art-a-Whirl a couple of weeks ago I picked up a booklet from MCAD with continuing studies in art education. I found the perfect class for me to bring my business to the next level.

Licensing for Artists is something I've been researching for a while now and can only find so much information from text and online. It will be nice to take a class with someone who has had some real world experience and get some good feedback from professionals in the business. The class will cover so many things I've had questions about in the last year including a licensing portfolio, brand identity and royalties. I hope to continue taking classes a la carte to free myself from the mundane routine of life. :) A class in mold making and screen printing is next on my list.

New Craft Show - The Talent Show

Typically my rule for a new show is to check it out before I participate. Even in its first year The Talent Show looks very promising. After seeing some of the artists signing on, one of my favorites being Too Many Suitors, I decided to give it a shot. The space looks beautiful and since I have plenty of inventory.. what the heck, I'll try it out. Sometimes you have to take a risk. Who knows it may be the next great indie craft show. I'm just about finished crafting for this weekends Craftstravaganza event. This is one of the funnest craft shows around! Lots of creative young people participating. Not at all stuffy and pretentious like some art shows can be. Don't you love the promo poster? It couldn't match my blog any better. I swear I didn't have anything to do with the design. :)

Above is a pic of some new strawberry sweeties. This year I will have more items than ever so please drop by and check them out. Ever since I made my first paper toy, the gnome mushroom cottage I've wanted a to make a dollhouse version. This tiny dollhouse is part of a series of paper mushroom cottages I hope to finish soon. Gnomie the gnome lives in this red capped cottage complete with paper furnishings. I just love the wood grain furniture and all the other details of the house. I 'm thinking some of Gnomie's animal friends and a vegetable garden will complete this playset. :) I've included the original rough sketch of my idea to show some of the process involved when I create new toys.

How cool is this! Zazzle.com has got to be the funnest website to make products from your own illustrations. It features hundred of items to place images on including t-shirts, skateboards and even shoes! Its really high tech and it allows you to see the product as it would look finished. It does however require the latest flash update to properly function.You can even set up shop and sell products with your images and get a percentage of the sale. I'm slowly getting use to the site but eventually I'll have items available in my Zazzle shop. What do you think? Should I design more products?

I spent the whole day playing and I came up with a few items. A tote to carry all your crafty purchases with my newest pin cushion character. Or a pair of Matryoshka slip-ons for your little girl. Don't forget the two tone coffee mug with cute mushroom cottages. Imagine the possibilities!

Toys From My Collection

These are some of the toys I've picked up through the years. Some are vintage, some are new and some are made by me and other artists. I've always been attracted to old toys. I believe thats the reason I started making toys because good antique toys are difficult to find and rather expensive.This particular collection surround me at my computer desk and hutch.

My grandmothers doll, Steiff kitten, Steiff hare hand puppet and miniature White Rabbit doll made by me.

A mixture of old and new kitschy items I couldn't live without. Some of the toys are picked up on my travels and some are made by toy artists. My favorite happens to be the vintage Charlie Brown in the top left corner. I had seen that doll in a book of mine and wished to have it and year or two later I found in a shop that sold old toys. A Tracy Mcman push puppet and Erica Daley spool dollie are some the artist toys I've purchased.

Pom Pom Bunny and Mushroom Egg Tutorial

Just in time for the Easter holiday, a simple and sweet Easter tutorial! This has to be my easiest crafty tute so far. The young ones will be delighted with this cute little bunny and mushroom egg.The bunnies are made with three different sizes of pom poms and a bit of felt. I purchased the wooden eggs for the mushrooms at Michael's. The wooden eggs are great because they're already painted white and they have a flat bottom to stand upright. You could also use blown eggs which can be a bit messy and quite tricky. Another option is to put a string on the mushroom egg to hang from your Easter tree.

Red, White, Pink, and Black Felt
1/2”, 2”, 1 1/2” Pom Poms
Wooden or Blown Egg

Instructions

1. Print pattern and cut out pattern pieces.
2. Pin or trace pattern pieces onto felt scraps and cut out felt pieces from pattern. Use a paper punch to punch out bunny nose and eyes.
3. Glue ears to back of 1 1/2” pom pom. Assemble bunny together using 2” pom pom for body and 1/2” for tail. Glue bunny face to head.
4. Create mushroom cap by overlapping access to create wide cone. Glue felt spots to mushroom cap.
5. Finish mushroom egg by gluing felt cap to wooden or blown egg.

The Cutest Little Toy Shop In America!

I recently had the pleasure of designing the outside sign for this charming toy store in Plymouth, Michigan. The Dollhouse and Toy Cottage is an old fashioned toy store that been in business for over 35 years. If I ever had my own shop it would look a lot like this. I just love the pink facade and sloping roof with scallop trim. It matches my brand perfectly. I only wished I lived closer so I could spend hours looking at all the collectible toys inside. Don't you want to visit? Its almost worth a road trip!

MIA - Foot in the Door 4

Foot in the Door is an event thats held every 10 years at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. If your artwork fits in a 12" cube your accepted to participate in the states largest art exhibition. Three gallery spaces are filled from floor to ceiling with artwork from over 5000 artists. 3-D sculpture was displayed in the middle from one end to the other. I found my pink fawn in the midst of a variety of artwork. Check out the good, the bad and the ugly! The exhibit runs through June 13 and the admission is always free.

My biggest plush to date! At 2 feet tall and 4 lbs she's my symbol to THINK BIG and follow my dreams. I have always wanted to make a large scale version of my signature pink fawn. I started Sunday night with piecing together the pattern enlarged from my copy printer. By Tuesday night I had finished her with the last stitch of her embroidered eyelashes. I imagine her to be the focal point of my fantasy toy store or perhaps she'll make an appearance at my next show. ;)

With Easter just around the corner its time to unveil my newest plush characters. There is something about a duck that just makes me laugh and smile. They're such a goofy bird and I knew I had to design one for my collection. One thing led to another and well I couldn't have a Mama Duck without a bunch of baby ducklings.. sooo why not have a whole duck family as part of my Easter collection.

Each baby duckling sits in a round box covered with felt and felt flowers. Baby Bunka and her little Scotty are printed cloth dolls made with computer printer fabric. If you haven't heard of computer printer fabric its fabric paper you can run through your ink jet printer and print directly onto the fabric. It has a variety of uses such as pillows, quilting and of course I use it to make toys. I purchase mine at the local Joanns in the quilting section. Otherwise Dharma Trading Co. is a good source to find it online. Computer fabric paper will only work with ink jet printers. It will not work with laser printers. Enjoy!

Materials Required

Computer Printer Fabric
Calico Print Fabric
Polyfill
Ink Jet Printer

Instructions

1. Print PDF onto computer printer fabric. Follow instructions from the printer fabric you purchase.
2. Cut out doll and pin right sides together to calico print of your choice. The back side of doll will be a nice print or solid color. Cut out calico print around the doll.
3. Sew doll together with about a 1/8” seam leaving a small opening for stuffing.
4. Clip Curves. Turn right side out. Stuff Bunka with polyfill and close opening with a ladder stitch.
5. Repeat process for Scotty dog and lollipop. Use a wooden skewer or toothpick for lolli stick.

I think Easter is becoming my second favorite holiday right after Christmas. I love the pastels and all the cute critters associated with the holiday. New Embroidery Machine

I've been dying to get an embroidery machine for quite awhile now and I finally took the plunge last month because I was given a nice discount. $500 bucks off and 20% off the software...SCORE! The machine is quite sophisticated and a little fussy so I decided to give it a fitting Swedish name, so I call him Bjorn. ;) There is a lot of software to learn but within a few months I'll be cranking out my own illustrations as embroidered art. Just imagine the possibilities.. cross stitched covered buttons and patches to name just a few. Heres my first sample that Pam from the Viking sewing gallery helped me finish.

I thought I'd start the new year gushing about some of my favorite artists. I love it when I find a new artist that makes me jump up and down with excitement. Lucky Nielsen's exquisite needle felted sculptures are truly works of art. She likes all the things I like... little deer, mushroom houses, ric rac trim and gnomes. Whats not to love about her work! Check out the details of the mushroom house and gnome girl. Shes fairly new to the crafty scene so make sure to check out her Flickr for her other needle felted treasures. Best thing yet she lives in my hometown which means I get to buy some of her creations in person. Consider me a future collector of her work! I can't wait to see what she comes up with next! Disneys Back!

I'm so happy Disney 2-D animation is alive and well! A few years ago when Disney announced they would not make any more 2-D animation for theatrical release I was so saddened. I grew up with the art of Disney and it has inspired me artistically more than anything else. As much as I like computer generated animation nothing compares to the artistry of hand drawn animation.

I've been anticipating the opening of The Princess and the Frog since I first heard about it. This movie has all the bells and whistles of any classic Disney movie. The animation is beautifully rendered and some of the musical sequences are a toe tapping blast. The characters are a hoot and should be well remembered with the cast of current Disney favorites. I'm glad to see Disney is back to its traditional roots.

Its Official-HGTV Airdate!

I'm almost afraid to post this buts its official I finally have an air date for a segment I filmed for HGTVs Thats Clever. Back in the Spring of 2007 I filmed a six minute segment for over six hours. Four people including a producer, director, camera guy and sound guy took over my tiny apartment and filmed me demonstrating the craft of making a miniature giraffe doll. The segment features the full tutorial from the sculpting, baking, painting and dressing the miniature doll. It was a grueling process.. between the multiple takes and my newly discovered stuttering problem I managed to get through the segment. I learned a lot from the experience- mostly that I'm not cut out for television. Frankly jumping out of an airplane would of been more comfortable. :) Thank goodness my mother was there for moral support. So years later its finally airing. With so many other shows in the can I guess it takes awhile to get on air. Heres a photo of the giraffe doll featured and setting up for filming.

No Coast 09 Show Pics

Just a couple of snap shots from the No-Coast Art Fair. Both days were good. Saturday was beautiful and the people were out in droves. These photos were taken during the quiet morning before the event. My new felted ornaments were hit as well as my plush ornaments. Some talented new artists there. Penguin and Fish and Studio Mela were my favs. P@F is a triple threat, graphic designer, illustrator and toymaker. My favorite kind of artist! Check them both out at etsy.

This is the second year I have offered the clothes pin people ornament kit and this year I designed a winter themed version of Cinderella. Each kit contains materials to make Cinderella, her charming Prince and even the glittery carriage. Inspired by the fashion of Marie Antoinette, Cinderella wears a lovely ball gown and a powdered wig. Kits are available as a limited edition while supplies last. Serendipity in NYC

My friend Laurie left to go to art school in New York City right after she graduated from high school. I always thought it was so brave to pack up your things and travel to the big city like that. We sort of kept in contact over the years and then I hadn't heard from her in over ten years. She recently found me on facebook and we caught up with each others lives. I went to NYC last week and was thinking how nice it would be to get a tour from someone who really knew New York. I thought of Laurie- the only person I knew in New York but didn't know how to get a hold of her besides facebook.

The fifth day of my visit I was determined to find the carousel in Central Park. I decided not to ride and just watch and take photos. I noticed this woman standing in front of me who looked vaguely familiar. She was wearing a funny knit hat and had a distinct profile. She was also taking photos. I looked again.. could it be?? It can't be! Twenty plus years older but yes I think it is! How in a city of millions and a million things to do could I possibly run into Laurie? I asked the woman, "Are you Laurie?" Yes it was! What are the odds of being at the same place at the same time in the busiest city in the world. It was meant to be.

Thankfully she had the next day off and gladly gave me a tour tailored made for me. Since we had similar interests she knew of all the places I might enjoy. We met in the meat packing district at New Yorks latest hot spot, the High Line. We went off to West Village and visited all the cute shops in the area. She showed me all the markets and places where I could possibly sell my toys. We had lunch at a little pizzeria and we visited the Christmas floor at Macy's. We walked up to the garment district where I found some of the best trim shops in the world. We sat in Times Square and pondered about tickets to a show. Finally night fell and we took a subway to the Brooklyn Bridge where we walked and looked at the big city that filled the sky with its bright lights. All in all it was the best day from my visit to New York and I will keep it with me always.The following photos are some of the highlights from my week in NYC.

My computer died! :(

Well it finally happened, my computer bit the dust. Six years of my life trapped in an unuseable hard drive. Looks like I'll have to buy a new one. I will have very little internet availibility within the next couple of weeks until this is resolved. Good news though I'm going on vacation to NYC so I won't have to think about it for a week. My etsy shop should be up and running just in time for holiday shopping. Looking forward to putting this behind me and having a brand spanking new computer to play with until that one dies. Don't forget to back up your files!

This is the sweetest set of paper toys. It would make a great activity for a rainy day or when the kids are getting a little bored. The shapes are fairly simple to cut out so even the younger children can give it a try.

I have designed two new toys to go with my original set. The Gnomie Paper Doll has got to be my favorite. While she wears a nightie for bedtime she also has three additional outfits to wear. One outfit is for apple picking, another for gardening and a cute little dress she wears while naturing animals.

Also included in the gnome inspired paper toys set is a movable paper puppet, three finger puppets, a hanging mobile and a fun game of gnome bowling.

Only a couple of household materials is required to make the paper toys. Download the set to your home computer and print on 60 lb. cardstock at your convenience. Have Fun!

Fantastic Toys Powderhorn Art Fair

My first outdoor craft show didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped it would. The weather forecast had been predicting thunderstorms all weekend and sure enough the night before it rained soaking my tent through and through. Thankfully I set up my inventory the day of so nothing was damaged ...just a leaky wet tent. Minutes before the show was about to start, black ominous clouds rolled in overhead and nasty winds forced us to shut everything thing up. Eventually the rain subsided but the winds continued to blow knocking my pretty things onto the wet ground. The first day was so disappointing I thought I would never do another show again.

Day two went much better. The weather was beautiful.. sunny and cool. I was much more optimistic. I made some corrections to some of the problems from the day before and the day was much less stressful. I never reached my sales goal but I ended the day with more experience and looking forward to the next outdoor show. In fact I received an invitational award to return next year.
